A Small Group

A Small Group comes together for the purpose of creating a new conversation and sense of relating that allows them to bring about an alternative future.  If we want to see a change in our communities, then we have to change the conversation.

A Small Group creates the future by shifting the context or set of beliefs which see our communities as a set of needs and problems to be solved. They see that the solution is not better leaders, more money, stronger programs, more experts, more studies and master plans.

These conversations are committed to communities as possibilities, full of gifts and people wanting to commit to the well-being of the whole. While some of our communities will have challenges with unemployment, poverty, homelessness, lack of suitable housing, these are not the problems. It’s how we think about these issues that keep us stuck.

Peter Block advises us to change the conversation, from:
• negotiation and pursuit of narrow interests to the co-creation of common purpose
• problem-solving to possibility
• blame to taking responsibility
• retribution to restoration

When we focus on gifts/assets, it replaces our focus on deficiencies. The work is to value and bring to the centre the gifts of those in the community who remain on the margin.  You can find out more here on how to have these conversations.
